Upon retiring and settling down in a small town of North Carolina, my parents were not able to get around and do many of the things they used to. It became very difficult for my mother and father to accomplish even the most common activities that we take for granted like, simply driving to the supermarket, even basic household chores like doing dishes and taking out the trash.
My mother has severe asthma and nerve damage and my father has a hard time getting around with his oxygen tank. Things haven’t been completely the same for him since coming home from the Korean War
My mother has always been a dedicated woman. As a wife and mother of five (until my brother’s passing), she has always managed to maintain a household and keep the family together. Growing up, I can tell you first hand; this has not been an easy journey for her.
I cannot remember the loving parental invite into this world as a newborn and I certainly cannot remember the countless changing of my diapers, but what I can do is show my appreciation to the parents who brought me into this world in any way that is creatively possible. Which brings me to the main point of my story.
As I was helping to take care of my aging parents, I noticed that they could use some cheering up. I began creating novelty collectibles for their enjoyment. Refrigerator magnets and customized printed t-shirts became the gradual inception to getting their mood in better spirits. Unbeknownst to me, this was the beginning to what would become a string of projects dedicated to my parent’s well-being. My mom and I didn’t always have the best communication and Mother – Daughter relationship. My father was often distant and a man of little words. However, all that began to change, as I would brainstorm a creative design project and surprise them with wrapped gifts that would bring smiles to their faces and a warmth in my heart; I love my parents dearly.
“I heard you were the one I could talk to about getting my t-shirts made. Girl, I saw how you did Mrs. Williams shirt and that was fabulous! How can I get one made for me?” I was caught a little off guard by this question. Mrs. Wallace is a neighbor of my Mother’s and as chance would have it, during a casual conversation one morning, she commented on my Mother’s shirt.
“I would be happy to make one for you.” I replied, “How would you like it?”
Mrs. Wallace proceeded to describe for me exactly how she would like her shirt made. This was one of my first “official orders” around 2002. I designed her customized shirt and within days, she had it in her hands. Surprised as she was with the turn-around time and how professional it looked, Mrs. Wallace Insisted on paying me for my work. That was a great feeling. What soon followed was a string of orders all requested by word of mouth.
My various handcrafted gifts took off so well among family, friends and people around town, etc. that I decided to share my personable handcrafted designed gifts with the world. Now, I am proud to say, designbyeves was born as a grassroots idea out of love, a lot of hard work and passion for helping others feel good.
